Skipper George wins the day!
It was a warm sunny morning at Olds Park in our opening round game away vs. St. George. Captain George Hansen won the toss on what looked a good batting wicket and promptly decided to bat first. The Manly side had a rough start at 2-7, but George Hansen and Jacob Burmeister stuck at the crease, realising the pitch may not quite be as batter friendly as first thought. Working hard to build a platform and got the game going back on Manly’s terms. With some good running between wickets and great shot selection, a 50 run partnership ensued with Manly gaining ascendancy.
Not long after the first drinks break a mistimed shot would see Jacob back at the sheds on 33 off 49 and Manly at 3/65. It continued to be all Manly from there, with George and Ryan Rosenkowitz looking untouchable at the crease, with elegant drives, solid defence and high class pull shots. George would make an excellent 122 off 151, his first 100 in Manly colours. Superb from our skipper! Ryan played an excellent supporting hand, with impressive 56* off 82 and did just the job that was needed for the team. A great 157 run stand from the pair. Fred Tyson came in with 8 balls remaining and finished 6* off 6. Excellent running between wickets being a highlight of Manly’s batting innings, finishing 4/229 from their 50 overs. This seemed a strong total on this pitch.
Manly came out bowling with vastly different conditions. High winds, cloud and eventually on and off drizzle. Some good batting from Jack Alford and Joshua Robinson, saw St George looking good at the crease at 0/32 off 5 overs. Just when Manly needed something, Ishaan Kumaar Singh (1/18 off 8), bowled a high-class delivery that made Jack Alford pop it up and with the wind swirling Cooper Gabriel made a great catch going back with the flight to remove St George’s most dangerous batter. From there, the Manly bowlers bowled diligently in somewhat tough bowling
conditions with the ever increasing gusting winds. Toby Redwood getting an impressive 2/19 off 8 overs and Jack Egerton 2/25 off 6 overs. Excellent tight bowling from Riley Stradling continued the trend with 1/8 off 5. Cooper Gabriel bowled his leg spin with great control in the tough conditions to finish with 1/15 off 7 and the game
was well in Manly’s control. Manly restricted St George to 7/152 off their 50 overs.
Well done to the boys in blue with a solid win first up. Congratulations to George for an incredible knock!
