Round 2 – Manly vs NWS Hurricanes – 5 December 2021
Manly welcomed NWS to the home of cricket (Plateau Park) for another battle under English conditions. Neo won the toss and elected to bat.
Neo and Luke M began well and took the score to 0-34 off 10. Then with the change of bowlers, and a ring field on the slow ground, our runs per over began to dry up. The English drizzle came on and off keeping the ground and pitch soggy. NWS employ an 11 year old donkey dropper who’s spin bowling went as high as it went far which created high bounce from his awkward length. This tactic worked as Luke M popped a catch to point with the score on 52 (21st over).
Nelson came to the wicket and did well to rotate the strike and lift the run rate, batting with Neo for an 88 run partnership. Nelson (32) was eventually caught in the 45th over when looking to lift the run rate further (3.13 per over). With bats in the shed Manly looked to go hard in the final overs.
The final 6 overs saw the score go from 1-138 to finish 8-173 after 50. Neo finished on 47 after batting most of the overs. The swift loss of wickets with 4 ducks showed how hard it was to score off the bat and pick up the run rate when the opposition were bowling to plan on a slow wet field. Sam however showed how it was done with a handy 24 not out off just 12 balls.
NWS came out to bat looking to score 174 at a rate of 3.48 / over. The run rate becomes important if there’s more rain, and once their innings reaches 15 overs.
Manly set a heavy off side field with 3 slips and NWS lost their first wicket with the score on 1, caught Nelson bowled Max at 3rd slip. NWS then steadied, reaching the drinks break at 1-39 off 17.
After the break, a short ball from Luke P removed their top scorer, and soon after another fell by stumping to the speedy glove work of Keegan. Keegan had a stellar performance this game with 2 stumpings, a catch and assisting a run out.
From there NWS lost wickets steadily and finished on 72-10 off 35 overs, 101 runs short.
Harper was the star wicket taker with the ball, only some dropped catches prevented him taking 5, he finished with 4-18 off 10. Max 2-7 off 5, Sam 2-11 off 8, Luke P 1-4 off 2. Max got a run out and a catch, Sam, Harry, Keegan, Nelson all got catches.
