U11/1 Round 1 v Northern Districts

On a hot sunny morning the Manly U11 Div 1 team took the field in Rydalmere, hungry for a win in their first match of the season against the Northern Districts team. Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat, and they were immediately on the back foot against some great pace bowling from the opening bowlers. Eddie in particular brought some sizzling pace and after catching the edge without luck a number of times was able to slide one past the bat and clean bowl the Districts opener. Ethan and Zac followed up with some tight bowling, keeping the pressure up until Zac delivered a great ball to clean bowl the Districts #3.

After some very tidy spin from Jensen, the remaining Districts opener tried to hit Hugo, only to sky it high enough that Hugo could take a fantastic catch off his own bowling, leaving Districts reeling at 3 for 20-odd. The next two batsmen were kept under pressure from some tight bowling from Blake and Ollie, until Ollie bowled one and TT bowled the other shortly afterwards, and at 5 for 43 Manly were well on top. The next two batsmen put on nearly 20 for the partnership, before Jesse struck twice in three balls (LBW and bowled) to put Districts back on the back foot. After a few more overs of great bowling yielded very few runs, Jesse was back in the action with a run-out, before Cruz wrapped up the tail with a great catch to Ethan and a great delivery to bowl out the last batsman leaving Northern Districts all out for 81.

Given the relatively small total, the Manly batsmen could have taken it easy, but Luke and Cruz came out batting with intent, with some excellent running between wickets and great shots punishing any loose balls. They were nearly half-way to the total after just six overs when Luke missed a very good ball to be bowled for 9. Ekam joined Cruz at the crease and after a few nervous moments including a couple of near-misses with run-outs, he hit his stride, striking two fours off successive balls in the 10th over to bring the total within sight. The boys continued to bat well, pushing the run rate up towards six an over, before Cruz fell just short of the winning runs, leaving TT and Ekam to complete a comprehensive win.
